Dena Higley has created an enviable life for herself. Married more than 20 years, the author has four lovely children, enjoys a comfortable suburban lifestyle and a career that many would die for. It begs the question—Why has Higley found herself bloodied and confused in an emergency room? Why her vodka-party-for-one, of course.
Momaholic – Crazy Confessions of a Helicopter Parent begins with a bang–make that a crash and burn. Higley’s eldest son, who struggles with autism, had recently returned from a trying sophomore year at college. Her 14-year-old daughter was recovering from reconstructive surgery. Her youngest son had a risky, but thriving small business at school. Add to that her job as head writer for Days of Our Lives. The position regularly landed Higley in the hot seat with company execs who demanded a cure for dwindling ratings.
But, as the author points out, these were merely events that led to her emergency room escapade. There is only one reason that finally drove her over the edge.
This book incited the busy body in me. I was a fly on the wall to the Higley family drama, fights with television executives, and the author’s turbulent wedding planning for her eldest daughter, an ordeal that put Higley’s own marriage in peril.
Higley’s balance of humor, introspection and self-deprecation makes this one a real page turner.
What this book is not. If you want a detailed explanation of helicopter parenting, an analysis of parenting styles, and a guide to determine the best style for your family, this is not the right book.
What this book is. Momaholic allows us to pull back the curtains on a woman who seemed to have it all, and see that we all struggle, have insecurities and setbacks.
If you are wondering if you are a helicopter parent, you might find Chapter 34: “Are you in the Club?” and Chapter 35: “The Test” to be informative.
I would recommend this book to a friend or any mom who needs an interesting break from her own reality.
So what was the final straw that broke the author’s back (precipitated the drinking binge that sent her to the hospital)? Wouldn’t you like to know. Thanks to the folks at Thomas Nelson, you just might find out.
