I came across an interesting writing contest on StageofLife.com. They are taking entries through April 30 on the topic “What is your philosophy on extracurricular activities?”
My initial thought was that I don’t have any such philosophy. My daughter is much too young for that. As I searched for inspiration, I came across Amy Chua’s Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother.
I heard about this book a while back. It’s advertised as one mother’s experience of the ups and downs of parenting the “Chinese way.” From the reviews and commentary, Chua’s philosophy on extracurricular activities can be summarized as strict, unrelenting, and borderline abusive. While this may be a turn off for some readers, it makes me want to dig into Tiger Mother all the more. I plan to read it in the very near future and post a thorough review.
Don’t forget to enter the StageofLife contest. Here’s my entry. I promise not to be mad if you win.
So what’s your philosophy on extracurricular activities?

There are definitely some downsides to participating in extracurricular sports. As a mom of 2 boys, I can relate to your entry! My husband was in football until he blew out his knee senior year, and his scholarships went flapping in the dust. I have siblings now who are in a sport every season, and they seem to enjoy it, but they live closer to the school than what my kids probably will. I think you have to look at time commitments and transportation time when considering extracurriculars too – it’s not just sports that can take up time! Great entry and good luck in the competition!
